India has firmly established itself as one of Toronto's most important overseas visitor markets.

  • In 2010, the number of Indian visitors to Toronto increased by 28 percent (to over 70,000 visitors), making it Toronto's second fastest-growing market
  • These visitors accounted for approximately $50 million in spending
  • Indian visitors spend an average of 18 days in Toronto–longer than visitors from any other major market
  • Data through the first quarter of 2011 indicate that the Indian visitor market continues to expand, as the number of arrivals to Ontario has increased by 8 percent over the same period in 2010.

More information on Toronto's visitors from India and other global markets is available in Tourism Toronto's 44-page research report Tourism in Toronto: 2010 in Review.

HIGHLIGHTS

Trending in Toronto
"Toronto is Trending" was the talk of Twitter, blogs and traditional media outlets when Tourism Toronto launched the new site two weeks ago. Working with lead marketing agency CP+B, TT designed the site to engage visitors and residents via a live Twitter feed, Google Map view and social media "check-ins" to show what's hot in Toronto right now. The site also promotes tickets, restaurants and hotel packages.

Emphasizing Mississauga
TT's Mississauga Visitor Guide has just been released for distribution in CTM display racks, hotels and highway rest stops throughout Southern Ontario and train stations and airports in Toronto and Ottawa. A new format and expanded editorial content enhance the comprehensive listings and photos that showcase the range of visitor offerings throughout the region.

Big missions in the Big Apple
Tourism Toronto Media Relations partnered with OTMPC and Ottawa Tourism to host a media reception in New York City June 2. The event drew 20 journalists who feasted on culinary offerings from Drake Hotel Chef Anthony Rose, while learning what's happening in the destinations. Among the attendees were contributors and editors from the New York Post, Washington Post, Elite Traveler, CNN Go, Food Arts, Condé Nast, Bon Appetit, Lonely Planet, Architectural Digest and New Yorker magazines.

A non-stop sales mission to NYC and New Jersey targeting tour operator clients selling to both adult FIT/group and student educational markets saw 16 member organizations meet with over 30 tour operator companies. Numerous new contracts were generated resulting in immediate business for various members.

They shoot, we score
Mississauga St. Mike's Majors hosted an exciting MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament May 19-29 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, with over 40,000 fans attending the games and bringing over 2,300 hotel room nights to the Mississauga area. TT was proud to support the winning Bid Committee and the Host Organizing Committee, providing a warm welcome at the airport, arena and hotels to players, families and fans from across Canada.

European tour operators get first-hand experience
As part of TT's key cities initiatives, the International Leisure Trade Sales team recently hosted trade clients from two important European centres. Tour operators from Milan, Italy received five days of destination training that focused on attractions, tours, restaurants and hotels that are of specific interest to the Italian market, along with a day trip to Niagara Falls and the wine region. As a result of this educational trip, the operators are interested in developing new Toronto programs for the 2011 holiday season with a strong push to position Toronto to the Italian market as an alternative to New York City for pre-Christmas shopping. A mix of traditional trade partners and online consumer-direct clients took part in a two-day fam for product managers of eight key German Air Transat-sponsored tour operators. New restaurants, attraction options and tour products were showcased to stimulate new 2012 Toronto itineraries and enhance existing programs.

Now showing on UOL.com: Toronto
One of the most popular websites out of Brazil, with more than 20 million page views monthly, is currently airing a series of eight videos on different aspects of Toronto after a TT-led press trip in May.

Para TO
As a result of TT's Media Relations' recent fashion and style-themed press tour, one of the leading women's lifestyle magazines in Argentina ran an eight-page story on Toronto in its special edition May 2011 issue. Para Ti magazine reaches over 60,000 Latina fashionistas.

Mississauga awards
TT's Sport Sales team attended one of Canada's most established community sports dinners on June 9. At the Mississauga Sports Council's 37th Annual Sports Dinner, Mississauga athletes, coaches and volunteers were recognized for their exceptional achievements and contributions to sport. One of our Mississauga partners, John Lohuis — Director Recreation and Parks, City of Mississauga was awarded the prestigious President's Award. Congratulations to all.

Capital golfers
TT's Canadian Association Sales team networked with 200 key national association representatives at CSAE's annual golf tournament on June 20. TT was also front and centre as the Gold Sponsor.
