Experiencing Winterlicious 2014
By Kristen Sarah
It’s wonderful to be part of something big, especially when it involves some of the best and most creative cuisine from around the world that Toronto has to offer!
Winterlicious, Toronto’s biggest winter culinary celebration, is returning for two weeks, beginning January 31st until February 13th, 2014. Wait? Winter-what? Prepare to have your taste buds jumping for joy!
Winterlicious is when major restaurants around the city offer limited menus of prix fixe lunches and dinners at a discount from typical prices ranging from $15 for lunch and $45 for dinner with drinks and gratuity costing extra. Where a dinner at one of the featured restaurants would normally cost you $100, it will end up costing you only $45. Now that’s a good deal! This is an ideal opportunity to indulge in dishes that you don’t typically order. From the most exotic to something traditional, this is the time where you can be adventurous and order a dish you can’t pronounce. However, if you still would prefer to order from the regular menu, many restaurants will have this available.
Keep in mind that greatly reduced bills means that servers stand to lose a fair amount of income. It is highly suggested to consider increasing your tips by 5-7%.
This year, more than 200 restaurants around the city will be participating in the prix fixe menu program. There will also be culinary events happening around the city such as a dinner-theatre at the Campbell House and attempting to set a world record for the world’s tallest teacake stand at Casa Loma.
Some of the restaurants participating in this year’s Winterlicious celebration aren’t new to the experience. In fact, several Winterlicious favourites such as The Drake and Corner House Restaurant will be offering a prix fixe menu, yet again for newbies or regulars to experience.
The first Winterlicious was held in 2003 with 35 restaurants participating and jumped to nearly 200 local eateries in 2013. Winterlicious 2014 is planned to be the biggest one yet! Where will you be eating?
