Contemporary Culture Film Series – Do the Right Thing (1989)
On the hottest day of the year on a street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, everyone’s hate and bigotry smolders and builds until it explodes into violence.
Featuring a stellar ensemble cast that includes Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Robin Harris, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Nunn, Rosie Perez, and John Turturro, Spike Lee’s powerful portrait of urban racial tensions sparked controversy while earning popular and critical praise.

May 9, 12, 15, 18, 24
Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts

Opening the Canadian Opera Company’s spring season is Gaetano Donizetti’s bel canto masterpiece, Lucia di Lammermoor, starring American soprano Anna Christy in a production created for her by director David Alden for English National Opera. Her shattering performance there was met with great critical and popular acclaim. Alden’s production transports audiences into the darkly brooding world of Sir Walter Scott’s Gothic novel in which Lucia is treated as little more than chattel within a brutal, power-driven society. American tenor Stephen Costello and American baritone Brian Mulligan make their COC debuts as Lucia’s lover, Edgardo, and Lucia’s vengeful brother, Enrico, respectively. Distinguished maestro Stephen Lord leads the COC Orchestra and Chorus through Donizetti’s cascading romantic melodies.
Single tickets for Lucia di Lammermoor are $12 – $325 (with specially priced $22 tickets available for people under the age of 30).
