Così fan tutte

Celebrated director Atom Egoyan returns to the COC, bringing his signature style to this wry comedy about two couples gambling with faith and desire. Featuring a cast of exciting young opera stars and distinguished, seasoned veterans, this work is full of both farce and folly. Yet Mozart’s sublime musical depiction of the honest and intimate struggles of love and temptation is truly one of the greatest pieces about relationships ever written.

Un ballo in maschera

An all-star cast includes Canada’s great diva Adrianne Pieczonka and the exciting tenor Dimitri Pittas.

Composed directly after his hugely successful Rigoletto, La Traviata, and Il Trovatore, Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera depicts a deeply human tale of forbidden passion between two very grown-up lovers. This stunning production sets Verdi’s abiding love triangle in the American south of the 1960s, with its undertones of Kennedy-era tensions and power plays.

A Masked Ball

The Canadian Opera Company presents A Masked Ball, Verdi’s bittersweet opera of forbidden passion amidst dramatic political machinations and turmoil. An all-star cast features great Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and American tenor Dimitri Pittas in role debuts as the opera’s two lovers, Amelia and Riccardo, embroiled in political intrigue beyond their control. Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Manistina returns to the COC as the mysterious fortune teller Ulrica, rising star British baritone Roland Wood makes his Canadian debut as Amelia’s husband, Renato, and Ensemble Studio graduate Canadian soprano Simone Osborne is the saucy page, Oscar. Stephen Lord, one of North America’s most distinguished conductors, leads the COC Orchestra and Chorus through Verdi’s thrilling score. This production from directors Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito sets the action in an invented reality that draws on American culture, mythology and visuals from the heightened Kennedy-era politics of the 1960s to the red carpet pageantry of awards shows in the new millennium. Striking period sets and costumes evoke the television series Mad Men, full of the colour, optimism and vitality of the early 1960s, along with the occasional more contemporary detail.

Single tickets for A Masked Ball are $12 – $332 (with specially priced $22 tickets available for people under the age of 30). To purchase, go to www.coc.ca, call COC Ticket Services at 416-363-8231, or visit the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts Box Office, located at 145 Queen St. W., Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Metamorphosis

Kafka’s terrifying but bizarrely comic story bursts onto the stage in a theatrically explosive new version.

The ordinary, unremarkable life of the Samsa family is turned upside down when their son, Gregor, the sole provider for the family, emerges one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a gigantic insect. His family’s feelings of revulsion turn to resentment with horrifying results.

This hugely acclaimed production combines breathtaking physicality and daring aerial action as the recently transformed Gregor lithely negotiates a gravity-defying split level set. Domestic tragedy or a metaphor for totalitarian brutality? Metamorphosisis fantastic, surprisingly funny and powerfully poignant.
