Pet Shop Boys

On July 15th, Pet Shop Boys return in triumphant form with their new studio album ‘Electric’, the first to appear on their own label x2. Pet Shop Boys will embark on the ‘Electric’ tour beginning in May, arriving in Toronto on September 25. The tour is created in collaboration with Es Devlin (creative director/designer) and Lynne Page (stage director/choreographer), and has already received rave reviews when it debuted in Mexico in March.

In March this year, a teaser video for ‘Electric’ appeared online. The accompanying music, ‘Axis’, which is the album’s opening track, is now available in full online and is here accompanied by a video: smarturl.it/psbaxisvideo. A Boys Noize remix of the track will follow.

‘Electric’ features nine tracks in total – eight brand new Pet Shop Boys’ songs plus a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘The last to die’. The result is as uncompromising a collection of dance anthems as Pet Shop Boys have ever made.

Perlman Plays Tchaikovsky

No violin soloist would touch Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto when it was originally composed. Yet just a few years later, it had become the beloved classic that it remains today. English composer Sir William Walton’s 1935 symphony charts a compelling path from darkness to light in the style of Beethoven through the masterful use of a large, twentieth-century orchestra.

Come for: A fascinating “new” Britten piece. During World War II, Britten began composing a clarinet concerto for Benny Goodman, but he didn’t finish it. It was completed by Colin Matthews and received its première in 2008.

And more: Itzhak Perlman—say no more!

Faith Healer

Three versions of the same story – but which one is true? This mesmerizing tale centres on a small-time faith healer who travels the countryside, miraculously curing the sick (or does he?) in every small town along the way. We also meet his wife (or is it his mistress?) who tells us her own tale of faith and healing; and his manager Teddy, who has his own version of events. Brian Friel is one of Ireland’s master playwrights, and Faith Healer one of his many worldwide successes.

The Flood Thereafter

A Canadian Stage Production in co-production with the Hopscotch Collective in association with the Theatre Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University.

Part portrait of small-town Canada and part timeless fable, The Flood Thereafter is a magical play by Sarah Berthiaume, a rising star of Quebecois theatre. Every day, twenty-year-old June does an abrupt strip show in the gritty Emotions bar with all the men of the town watching and weeping. June’s relationship to the men stretches back to the sirens who ensnarled the mariners of ancient Greece, but when a young stranger arrives in town the tide begins to turn.

Peace in Our Time: A Comedy

Take Geneva, one of Shaw’s fascinating but thornier late plays, lend it a freewheeling, extravagant adaptation by one of Canada’s most well-respected playwrights, and presto! The result is a sharp, contemporary, political comedy where affairs of state meet the Three Stooges. The play opens in a dysfunctional diplomatic office prior to the Second World War and ends in The Hague at a trial of the world’s dictators. Between, you are taken on a totally manic ride.

Trifles (Lunchtime One-Acts)

Two gripping marital mysteries by two playwrights who helped bring modern drama to America. In Trifles, a man is found dead but his wife can’t explain the rope around his neck. An obvious whodunnit? Not according to the wives of the investigators. In A Wife for a Life (O’Neill’s first play), a husband seeks revenge for his wife’s infidelity. He meets a young man in love and is forced to reconsider the very marriage he seeks to defend. Two little-seen plays in one gem of an outing.

The Light in the Piazza

A glorious musical story set in Italy in the summer of 1953. Margaret is touring the Tuscan countryside with her daughter, Clara. While sightseeing, Clara has a chance encounter with Fabrizio, a handsome Florentine, and they fall in love. Margaret tries to keep them apart to protect her daughter, who isn’t what she seems. But the romance of Italy is powerful, and it slowly transforms them all. From the writer of the musical Floyd Collins, which the Shaw Festival produced to huge acclaim in 2004.
