Innovation

The National Ballet of Canada’s Innovation series presents three cutting edge world premieres by exceptional Canadian choreographers in one dazzlingly eclectic programme of dance. This season the series features the outstanding and singular talents of Robert Binet, José Navas and James Kudelka.

Toronto native and Canada’s National Ballet School graduate Robert Binet is just embarking on his career as a choreographer, but already the Choreographic Apprentice with The Royal Ballet has created works for Wayne McGregor/Random Dance, the National Ballet’s YOU Dance programme, the second company of The Hamburg Ballet, Estonian Ballet and New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute.

Venezuelan-born and Montréal-based José Navas studied in Caracas and at the Merce Cunningham Studio in New York City, before moving to Canada in 1991. He founded Compagnie Flak in 1995 and has since choreographed over 30 pieces for both stage and film, touring his works extensively.

James Kudelka is one of Canada’s best-known and most highly-regarded choreographers, whose ballets range from new versions of the classical repertoire, such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Cinderella to highly innovative shorter works. His ballets have been staged the world over.

Mahler Symphony 1

Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 echos with European folk dances, spiced by a macabre sense of humour and glowing with an all-embracing love of humanity. The gracious, polished music of Johann Nepomuk Hummel, pupil of Mozart and Haydn and friend of Beethoven, epitomizes the music of the early-nineteenth century.

Come for: BBC Music Magazine calls gifted soloist Alison Balsom, “a true poet of the trumpet as well as a formidable athlete.” British conductor Edward Gardner, one of today’s hottest young Maestros, makes his TSO début.

And more: Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger is an audience favourite.

Program: Wagner: Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg; Hummel: Trumpet Concerto; and Mahler: Symphony No. 1 “Titan.”

Needles and Opium

An Ex Machina production presented by Canadian Stage.

One of Canada’s most renowned figures in performing arts, Robert Lepage creates a new production of his acclaimed Needles and Opium. Presented as a hypnotic series of vignettes, this fascinating, introspective show explores the complex relationships between displacement, drug addiction and the creative drive, as revealed through the lives of Parisian poet/filmmaker Jean Cocteau on his way to New York, and American jazz legend Miles Davis during his stay in Paris in 1949. The most startling technical wizardry at the service of a true emotional journey.

“A theatrical masterpiece.” – USA Today.

Jabber

In the Studio | Nov. 26-Dec. 7, 2013 | Grades 7-12.

Fatima is a typical Canadian young woman, rebelling against her strict parents. When anti-Muslim graffiti appears on the school walls, this hijab-wearing teenager is transferred to a new school. There, she makes an unlikely friendship with Jorah, a boy who has a reputation for anger issues. As their mutual attraction grows, the lines they cross to get closer together become the subject of an intense exploration of the meaning of boundaries. Jabber examines assumptions based on appearances within the school world – where a diverse student population must learn to negotiate cross-cultural respect and mutual understanding.

Winners and Losers

An exhilarating, playful, and brutally honest two-hander from the producers of 2013’s Someone Else.

Produced by Theatre Replacement and Neworld Theatre, in association with Crow’s Theatre, Presented by Crow’s Theatre in association with Canadian Stage
Winners and Losers is a staged conversation that embraces the ruthless logic of modern-day capitalism, and tests its impact on our closest personal relationships. Theatre artists and long-time friends Marcus Youssef and James Long sit at a table and play a game they made up called “winners and losers,” in which they name things and people — Pamela Anderson, microwave ovens, Goldman Sachs, their fathers — and debate whether, from their perspective, these things are winners or losers. As the conversation unfolds, the competition quickly begins to have an unanticipated cost.

“Youssef… and Long… have delivered the goods — the thrilling, experimental, theatrical goods.” – Georgia Straight.

“The experience for the audience is exhilarating.” – Vancouver arts journalist Jo Ledingham.

“Verbal fireworks.” – The Globe and Mail.
