Carmina Burana

Orff’s 1930s setting of earthy, middle-ages poetry brought simplicity and joy back into European art music. Carmina Burana celebrates feelings of universal emotions in a stunning, intensely memorable fashion.

Come for: You’ll recognize Carmina Burana from countless television commercials and film scores, especially the thunderous opening chorus: O, Fortuna (O, Luck).

The International Festival of Authors (IFOA)

The 34th annual International Festival of Authors will take place October 24 to November 3, 2013. Mark your calendars!

Each fall, the International Festival of Authors brings together the world’s best writers of contemporary literature for 11 days of readings, interviews, lectures, round table discussions, public book signings and a number of special events, including readings by Governor General’s Literary Awards and Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize finalists, as well as the awarding of the Harbourfront Festival Prize.

Every year, the IFOA devotes a number of events to authors and books within a particular focus. This year, we are delighted to present two major focuses: Brave New Word, a programme featuring young and emerging authors from Canada and abroad, and Found in Translation, a yearly Festival focus on the art of literary translation with the goal of increasing Canadian awareness of international talent.

In 2013, we’re putting the spotlight on young authors writing in genres from literary fiction to memoir, poetry to thriller. Join us as we celebrate some of the world’s most exciting new voices with readings, round table discussions and our first-ever FREE Artist Talks, featuring award-winning international writers talking about the unique challenges and opportunities that writing and publishing present today.

Available now is a Festival Flex Pass, which offers a chance to purchase a bundle of 10 tickets for one low price of $120 (plus a service charge). To buy your Festival Flex Pass, call the Harbourfront Centre Box Office at 416-973-4000.

I Love Lucy

Canadian Premiere!!!

I LOVE LUCY® LIVE ON STAGE is the brand-new hit stage show adapted from the most beloved program in television history! America’s favorite foursome – Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel – is live on stage and in color for the very first time!

It’s 1952 and you are a member of the studio audience awaiting the filming of two hilarious and oh-so-familiar I LOVE LUCY® episodes. Imagine stepping back in time onto the Desilu Playhouse soundstage where a charming host entertains and enlightens you to the behind-the-scenes filming process, the 1950s hi-fidelity technology and this brand-new thing called “television.” The episodes begin and you witness, firsthand, the side-splitting antics of that crazy redhead in the Ricardo’s New York apartment and thrill to the Cuban sounds of “The Ricky Ricardo Orchestra” at the famed Tropicana Nightclub. In-between scenes? The Crystaltone Singers perform live advertising jingles of the show’s newest sponsors in perfect 50s style harmony. Can you say “Brylcreem?!”

F’D Up

F’d Up! aims to explore the tension between these new directions that redefine the concept of “fibre art” based on examples of significant artists working in North America today. Based upon experimentation, these works differentiate the protagonists from decades before, thereby illustrating how a new vocabulary is created as the result of a formative radical gesture.
