April 17, 20, 26, 30
May 9, 12, 15, 18, 24

Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts
145 Queen St. W. (at University Avenue)

Opening the Canadian Opera Company’s spring season is Gaetano Donizetti’s bel canto masterpiece, Lucia di Lammermoor, starring American soprano Anna Christy in a production created for her by director David Alden for English National Opera. Her shattering performance there was met with great critical and popular acclaim. Alden’s production transports audiences into the darkly brooding world of Sir Walter Scott’s Gothic novel in which Lucia is treated as little more than chattel within a brutal, power-driven society. American tenor Stephen Costello and American baritone Brian Mulligan make their COC debuts as Lucia’s lover, Edgardo, and Lucia’s vengeful brother, Enrico, respectively. Distinguished maestro Stephen Lord leads the COC Orchestra and Chorus through Donizetti’s cascading romantic melodies.

Single tickets for Lucia di Lammermoor are $12 – $325 (with specially priced $22 tickets available for people under the age of 30).

Patti Smith: Camera Solo

This exhibition is included with General Admission pricing. This winter the AGO offers a glimpse into the world of legendary musician and artist Patti Smith through an intimate exhibition featuring photographs, personal objects, and a short film. Patti Smith: Camera Solo provides a rare opportunity to experience a different side of this rock icon – best known for her profound influence on the nascent punk rock scene in the late 1970s and 80s – through her poetic expression in the visual arts.

The first presentation of Smith’s works in Canada, this exhibition highlights the continual connections between Smith’s photography and her interest in poetry and literature. For more than four decades, she has documented sights and spaces infused with personal significance. Her visual work possesses the same unfiltered, emotional quality prevalent in her poetry and music lyrics: their allure lies in their often dreamlike imagery; their modest scale belies their depth and power.

Revealing the Early Renaissance: Stories and Secrets in Florentine Art

Revealing the Early Renaissance: Stories and Secrets in Florentine Art will explore how the city’s burgeoning economy of the time fostered a unique demand for artworks both religious and civic, as well as the collaborative nature of artistic production, a closer look at the workshops of artists, the stories behind the works and their subjects and insight into conservation research. Visitors will interact with the exhibition at numerous hands-on stations, offering the opportunity to explore inside the Renaissance artist’s studio, discover the pigments and tools used, hear music from a book whose pages will be reunited for the first time in over a century, view footage of Florence and see aspects of the works through the microscopes of conservators.
