Sezen Aksu
Sezen Aksu was born and educated in Izmir on the romantic and nostalgic Aegean coast of Anatolia in Turkey. During her school years, she studied painting, music and theatre. While attending the Aegean University she released her first musical composition with lyrics. This first song, ‘Kaybolan Yillar’ (Lost Years), became a hit that touched thousands of people’s hearts and marked the beginning of her professional career. Sezen Aksu is the first female Turkish artist to compose and perform her own music.
With all of her albums, she has been in the pursuit of bettering herself, without trying to prove anything to others. She has been embraced by fans the moment her songs are released as they continue to keep the beat of the social pulse and address issues close to the heart of the man and woman on the street. She has supported many artists and is proud of their continuing success.
Sezen Aksu writes songs that we all feel in our hearts.

Everyday Anthems
World Stage Production
Choreographed by rising star Heidi Strauss, along with text from playwright Brendan Gall, this new dance work explores anthems as a metaphor for overcoming obstacles, for things unrequited, for personal strength and belonging. An impassioned performance that poses questions around power, pride and unity in the face of difference. Strauss’s first creation for Toronto Dance Theatre draws on the embodied histories of her performers to create a richly physical ensemble work. Toronto Dance Theatre, under the artistic direction of Christopher House, is recognized for intelligent choreography and the exceptional artistry of its dancers.

Dominic Nahr: Captive State
Captive State is an exhibition of photographs taken by Dominic Nahr during two trips to Somalia. In August 2011, Nahr traveled to Mogadishu with Alex Perry (TIME’s Africa Bureau Chief) to document the famine in Southern Somalia. They found overwhelming suffering and death; approximately 150,000 of the 2.8 million Somalis affected eventually starved to death. Almost as appalling was the knowledge that a US anti-terrorism policy unwittingly blocked aid to the famine areas for years. Perry writes, “If drought set the conditions for last year’s famine in East Africa, it was man who ensured it.”
When Nahr and Perry returned to Mogadishu the following year, the improvements were tangible, but as Perry states, “If Mogadishu was enjoying its longest sustained peace in 21 years of civil war, you couldn’t mistake that for a return to normality.”A TIME Contract Photographer and Magnum Photos Nominee, Dominic Nahr graduated from the photography program at Ryerson University in 2008. Dominic Nahr: Captive State will be on view in the Ryerson Image Centre’s Student Gallery January 23 – March 10, 2013.
