Edmonton-born Aszure Barton’s delicately layered but vigorously imagined Watch her dazzled audiences when it premiered with The National Ballet of Canada in 2009. Set to Lera Auerbach’s interpretation of Pergolesi’s famous Dialogues on Stabat Mater, the work is a mesmerizing evocation of a spiritual state achieved through the physical vocabulary of dance. The idea of being perceived and how that conditions and situates the human body in both spatial and emotional terms, lends the work its powerful thematics as well as its focused energy. Watch her is the work of a formidable dance artist at her most compelling.

A marvel of narrative compression and choreographic economy, Sir Frederick Ashton’s affecting and engaging A Month in the Country is one of the great English choreographer’s finest ballets. Created for The Royal Ballet in 1975, with Lynn Seymour and Anthony Dowell in the principal roles, the adaptation of Turgenev’s story has attracted many of ballet’s greatest dancers. In 1995, Anthony Dowell himself set the work on The National Ballet of Canada, with Karen Kain and Robert Conn in the lead roles. It was the first time the work had been performed by a company other than The Royal Ballet.
