The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre — Doors Open
The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre is open both days for Doors Open Toronto, May 24 and 25. This remarkable double-decker theatre is the last of its kind in operation. It was built for vaudeville and silent films in 1913 for Marcus Loew and designed by architect Thomas Lamb. The theatres were renovated in the 1980s by the Ontario Heritage Trust. Marvel at the gilded plaster details, damask wall covering and domed ceiling of The Elgin. The Winter Garden offers hand-painted walls with garden scenery and a canopy ceiling of beech leaves. Visitors will get a chance to see both theatres, view samples from the world’s largest collection of vaudeville scenery and hear about the famous performers that have appeared both on stages. Hours 10am to 4pm – no admittance after 3:45pm, no tripods and not suited for children under five, strollers must be left at the door.
