April 7, 2014

Glenn Close is well known as an Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony award winner. She received her first Oscar nomination for the film, The World According to Garp and received four additional Oscar nominations for the films: The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction, and Dangerous Liaisons.

Glenn’s sister Jessie is a writer who has lived with bipolar illness for most of her life but wasn’t properly diagnosed until 2004. Since then she began using “anti-psychotic” medications and is today able to manage her illness. Jessie’s son, Calen, is also living with schizoaffective disorder.

In a culture where so few celebrities have spoken about their family ties and struggles with this particular mental illness, Glenn and Jessie are pioneers. Jessie is living proof that someone with this disorder can still be a success and play a vital role in society. In 2009, Glenn and Jessie helped to launch, “Bring Change 2 Mind.” A not-for-profit organization dedicated to confronting the stigma associated with mental illness. Today, Glenn, Jessie and Calen are actively involved in spreading the “Bring Change 2 Mind” mission of tackling the stigma and discrimination of mental illness.
