5 things to see at 2017 Toronto ComiCon
With over 400 exhibitors spread across 150,000 square feet, the 2017 Toronto ComiCon is a superhero-sized celebration of entertainment and comic book culture. For three days more than 25,000 cosplayers, aspiring writers and sci-fi enthusiasts descend on the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to celebrate (and debate) everything from Dr. Who to Star Trek to whether Han shot first. But navigating this labyrinth of colour, creatures and characters can be a sensory overload even for veteran attendees.
To help get you started on your quest, here are 5 things to see at 2017 Toronto ComiCon:
1. Celebrity Encounters and Photo Sessions
This year’s star-studded cast of 2017 Toronto ComiCon celebrities includes, and is not limited to, Robert Picardo, aka ‘The Doctor,’ of Star Trek fame, Ray Park, aka ‘Darth Maul,’ of Star Wars fame and, to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary, several members of the original Degrassi Junior High are attending. Be sure to check out the celebrity photo booth to make a memory with your favourite celeb with an 8×10 glossy photo.
2. Embrace the Dark Side with the 501st Legion
At 2017 Toronto ComiCon, there’s no need to visit a galaxy far, far away to get pictures with your favourite Star Wars characters. So, regardless of whether you prefer the dark side or the light, be sure to visit the booth of the 501st Legion, where you might encounter anyone, from Darth Vader to a Stormtrooper or the occasional Rebel Alliance pilot (in custody of course). May the force be with you!
3. Celebrate the steampunk revolution
Do you love high-tech Victorian fashion? Ever heard of an airship pirate? This year the steampunk revolution invades Toronto ComiCon, featuring the costumes, writing and illustrations that make up a fascinating subculture sci-fi world where the industrial revolution lives on to the present. Check out a special costuming panel featuring experts from the Toronto Steampunk Society or get your own Victorian-inspired gear from one of the many Steampunk artisans at this year’s event. Because it’s out with the new and in with the old!
4. Learn the art of the wig
From using the right materials to reviving old favourites, getting a wig on-point is paramount to any cosplay getup. Be sure to check out one of Arda Wigs Canada’s special exhibits to learn more about wig repair, heat styling and advanced wig techniques, to make your costume stand out among the vast cavalcade of colourful cosplay at 2017 Toronto ComiCon.
5. Meet rising stars of the comic book world
Nicknamed ‘Artist Alley,’ a special area of 2017 Toronto ComiCon is reserved for the illustrators, inkers and writers which create the animated fantasy worlds you love so much. From comics to graphic novels and simple illustrations, watch the rising stars of this industry in action as they create before your eyes. The interactive meet-and-greet is also useful for anyone looking to get facetime with some of the best in the business.
